They cleared the rooms one by one, moving off in separate directions, calling out “Clear!” just as they'd been trained. Manning found the den. He touched the teacups and felt the warmth of the liquid through the thin layer of his leather glove. The music still played. He went to the shelving unit and switched off the music.

As he exited the den, Barnett moved toward him down the narrow corridor. “They're gone,” he said.

Manning took a deep breath and let it out. He wanted to go out to the Hummer and shoot the GPS unit, then drive back to the Mountain to put a few bullets into the intelligence analyst that had transposed the numbers of the address, and finally empty the rest of the rounds from his magazine into Captain Shaker.

The captain and his intelligence staff were all idiots. Yet somehow, this would be made out to be Manning's fault.

“Should we go after them?” Barnett asked.

Holstering his pistol before doing something rash, Manning said, “Negative. We have no chance to catch up to them. We don’t even know their direction of travel. We need to figure out what their next move is and try to intercept.”

“I'll look around in the bedroom,” Barnett said, and walked back down the corridor the way he'd come only a moment before.

Manning sat down on the sofa, crossed one leg over the other, closed his eyes and breathed deeply. He opened his eyes after a few seconds, picked up the closest cup of tea and sipped it.

“You can run, but you can't hide.”
